Most of the ideas submitted (like using energy efficient light bulbs, low-volume flushing toilets, etc.)will save only an insignificantly small amount of tax dollars. The real answer to the problem is to undergo major spending cuts and downsizing. Our founders designed a very limited government with specific, enumerated powers. There are so many existing agencies, bureaus, and departments that should be totally unfunded and eliminated because their functions are unwarranted and/or provided by the states. For example, the U.S. Department of Education and U.S. Department of Transportation do nothing more than regulate the state's ability to regulate what is in the best interest of that particular state. By eliminating these and similar agencies and returning the power to the states and local governments (where it rightly belongs), the taxpayer would experience more income to spend as he/she chooses.
