Computer systems should be able to "talk" to one another

Currently, a great deal of staff time is spent retrieving data from one computer system and manually inputting it into another system or into an endless stream of spreadsheets requested by officals for their numerous reports.

If the various data-gathering systems could "talk" to one another, so that data input into one system could be automatically retrieved by other systems that use the same data, reporting requirements could be substantially lessened. Rather than continually reporting on the backlog of work that accumulates while they are manually compiling these reports, employees at all levels could then use the time saved to eliminate those backlogs in providing the services the agency exists to provide. The focus could be shifted away from reams of reports, toward the actual mission of serving the American people.
