Capture Knowledge from Retiring/Exiting Staff

Agency Staff are leaving at an accelerating rate, and with their departure goes a substantial amount of institutional knowledge and expertise. I propose to find ways to document the experiences and capture that knowledge and expertise prior to their departure through a combination of incentives and development of an infrastructure to develop, house and disseminate that knowledge. An example of an incentive would be time (hours) during the work day for several months prior to their departure to transcribe their “work memoirs.” The infrastructure could include any or all of the following: a “legacy” seminar for them to present a concise summary of their experiences; a process for any useful raw data developed during their career (notebooks, correspondence, electronic files, etc.); some catalogue of this information with cross-referencing not only by organization, but also by topic; and an intuitive, easy to navigate system for accessing the information.
