By eliminating the printing of separator sheets(which are essentially blank pieces of paper), and by Consolidating CPRS documents into a universal font and line spacing, Millions of dollars could be saved in not only the cost of paper, but also in the shredding, expenses and in printer ink cartridges each year.
The VA often saves money by reducing the numbers of FTE's that are employed. However, this is not cost effective, because it increases the workload placed on nurses and physicians. By increasing the numbers of clerks/secretaries/receptionists that are able to perform duties at much lower salaries. The cost of Fee Basing Veterans for services not provided at the VA is exponential. Services commonly offered in Private Medicine are not readily available in close proximity to Central VA Medical Centers. This results in veterans being Fee-Based to Private providers for services that could have been performed at the VA. The VA spends millions of dollars not only in software and security but also in employee productivity due to having to be vigilant in protecting veterans identities. By following civilian Medical Centers example and assigning Hospital Visit Numbers and Patient identity numbers not based on SSN, the VA would save millions of dollars each year. Numerous veterans who live hundreds of miles from their local VA rely on the Van system or are often carpooling with others they meet from CBOCs. However, Providers and Travel workers are not always aware when they are riding the VA Van system, because this information does not feed back into the system.
