Treasury currently has a system in place so that banks can input direct deposit for their clients and no other human interaction is required. There is a large volume of Direct Deposit requests that come into the local offices to be processed since numerous banks dont use the process. If the banks were required to use the tool that is already there the savings in man power would be huge.
We have software already on our computers to allow for printing to the screen without using paper. We implemented a paperless print process in my office and reduced our paper consumption by 40%. If we had a comprehensive push from the highest levels to implement and get a 20% or 30% reduction in paper usage that would be huge. There is no additional software to purchase, just create a plan, train, and implement.
A paper copy of Statistical Reports (i.e. State Assistance Program for SSI Recipients) is sent to each Social Secuirty Field Office (1200+ offices nation wide). The information is available on line and the paper copies are not used. Other statistical reports are also generated and mailed.
