Paper Towel Waste

I discovered some statistics about my government center that were intriguing. We have 900 paper towel dispensers across our center with a population of 74% engineers. We purchase about 15,000 rolls each year costing the government easily over $100,000 per year. The Dyson Airblade claims to be the fastest hand dryer that is hygienic, with a sticker price of $1,119 for each system. I propose that if the government replaced ...more »

Go Green(er)

I work for the Social Security Administration. Every day I process claims through several systems and frequently the claims information is printed out, even when I don't need a printout. We waste hundreds of sheets of paper on a daily basis. For an agency that is supposed to be "paperless", I feel this is wrong. We should be given the option of whether to print or not to print on all of our systems. This would allow ...more »

Electronic documents save money

Here at the Golden Field Office, we send grant documents to Intellectual Property in Chicago for every grant and modification that is completed. This results in anywhere from 20 to 60 pages being printed and shipped to Chicago. Instead of wasting paper, ink, and shipping costs (as well as the pollution byproducts), we should be able to send the digital files directly to Chicago via email or upload. This would have ...more »

Electronic Calendars - No Paper Calendars - $ave MILLIONS

SAVE at least $3.7 million - Employees with computers should have to use the e-calendar built into MS Office or their system's equivalent, (MACs have iCal). If only 1/2 the Federal employees have a desk calendar costing $2.68 or more, the annual cost for calendars is at least $3,783,861 nationally. The 2009 Census Bureau indicates there were 2,823,777 full and part-time Federal employees. If every employee who has ...more »

Electronic Notebooks to replace paper, notebooks and travel

Replace the use of lab notebooks, journals, notes, texts, handouts, etc. with the use of electronic notebooks/tablets. The elimination of such items would save in paper costs as well as make databases more accessable. Tablets can also provide new programs for note-taking, presentations, databases, as well as many other applications that make things more efficient. Another use of a the talet would be video conferencing ...more »

Cutting down on paper use - fax machine

When sending a fax, I feel that it is unnecessary to have a 'communication result report' printed out for every fax. If the person sending a fax stands at the machine for just a few minutes they will see that the pages have been transmitted and successfully sent. Wasting a piece of paper EVERYTIME a fax is sent is a total waste of resources; paper, ink, energy.

Computerized ICE Form 73-293

ICE-HSI utilizes a form called an ICE Form 73-293. This form is a 6 page carbon copy document. Currently it is the only form in our agency that requires a typewriter to complete. It is estimated that tens of thousands of these forms are submitted each year. The carbon-copy format also makes mistakes absolute, thus requiring one to waste several forms before submitting a final copy. A portion of this form also has ...more »
