Place sustainable gardens and orchards on all VA's with campuses large enough to support. The growing and producing of food will drastically reduce food costs and promote health/wellness/and sustainable living to Veterans and employees.
Similar to Michelle Obama's push for getting schools to provide healthier eating options to children, the federal government should also promote good nutrition by limiting the availability of unhealthy food in federal facilities. Create incentives for employee's to exercise regularly and set health guidelines based on current nutrition recommendations for cafeterias for all federal buildings. We have to lead by example in fitness and nutrition for the rest of the nation and employees will be more productive, satisfied, healthy, energetic and take less sick time.
Most junk food is made from corn byproducts. Most junk food is also cheaper to purchase than healthier food options (like fruits and vegetables). This is not a coincidence. Corn is cheap because it is subsidized by the government. Thus, the government is indirectly lowering the price of junk food at the supermarket by subsidizing corn.
