STOP THE INSANITY! Why Throw Away $$$ Billions???

Why does a completely tax exempt organization voluntarily throw away billions of dollars by paying taxes on travel? I travel a lot for the Navy and detest that taxes for TDY travel expenses are charged to my government credit card. Though the Government Treasury will get the taxes back, for the Navy and the Program Office (PMA), those funds are lost. Those lost and unrecoverable funds, which can quickly add up to billions, ...more »

Consolidate Anit-Virus Software Purchases

The Department of Justice (DOJ) could save from $300,000 to $500,000 from consolidating anti-virus software purchases. Currently DOJ uses at least 5 different anti-virus software products across the DOJ Component organizations. If that were replaced with 1 or 2 enterprise licenses, the advanatages would be significant cost savings as well as standardization of software.

Implement smarter workstation replacement policies

It is a given that CPUs need to be replaced every so often to accommodate software upgrades and improve processing speeds. (Perhaps it is true that some agencies, such as SSA, replace them too frequently, but that is the subject of other SAVE Award ideas so I will not get into that here.) However, computer monitors have longer life cycles and so whenever agencies do a workstation replacement they should not simply replace ...more »

VA Hospital Encounters

While working here at the VA, I am in charge of ensuring that the encounters for Patient billing are entered correctly for my department. Since taking over this task the number of errors being made by the staff in this department has drastically dropped because I created how to guides and done several different educational sessions with clinicians in our department. The VA has a vast problem with these encounters and ...more »

Fuel Savings

I am submitting this idea on behalf of Supervisor Joe Schmitt of Minneapolis, MN who works for OPM-Federal Investigative Services. He worked for the private sector in Minneapolis Field Office and his position allowed for him to have a corporate purchase card. His company was able to contract with certain large vendors for large cost savings of services. The federal government does this with various vendors as well ...more »

Save $3.5 billion/year in Medication Error Costs

Patient have difficulty understanding, remembering, and following technical, confusing medication instructions, and so may miss, double up on, or otherwise miss-take medications. When patients fail to improve as expected, clinicians may unnecessarily increase, duplicate, or change medications. Resultant poor patient health and avoidable, prolonged, more complicated hospital admissions lead to poor health outcomes and ...more »

NEGOTIATE VEHICLE OIL CHANGE FEE'S

We should stop paying approximately $30.00 - $50.00 for each government vehicle oil change for an estimated fleet of 600,000 vehicles government wide. Currently, we use hundreds of oil change facilities including national brands, car dealerships, etc. I recommend that we negotiate flat rate fee's for individual oil changes at 3-5 national brands and implement guidance for using these brands. If a designated brand ...more »

Adopt MANY of these suggestions

Why not adopt MANY of these suggestions? Many of these are legitimate money-saving suggestions for the Federal Government.

I suggest adopting as many of these as possible to give the American Taxpayers the Federal Government that they expect and deserve.

Reward Organizational Thrift

On command-level annual personnel reports, include a line to document the percent spent compared to the prior commander. Use an entire line to document unusual circumstances such as major storm events which may necessate extra expenditure. Reward commanders who are thrifty (yet fully accomplish the mission) appropriately, such as by accelerating their career paths. Promote them faster than commanders who spend more ...more »

All Department and Agency Data centers under One Federal Cloud

Move all data centers under Federal clouds (private like clouds for all Federal agencies, managed by one agency – physically spread out through out USA), we can make federal agencies (at least the civilian ones) use it on a pay and use basis. So, I am suggesting eliminating numerous agency specific data centers in the favor of one Federal cloud. Some of the features will help in reduction cost are: Eliminating redundancy ...more »

REDUCE THE SIZE OF GOVERNMENT

Lets hire an productivity consultant agency to find the departments and parts of Government that are redundant or unproductive and eliminate all the parts that are not needed. If we actually do this it will cut the size of Government by probably 1/3 at least!!! It would save billions! (might hurt the unemployment statistics tho....) (But if they are not working productively then why should tax payers have to pay for it?!) ...more »

Skill Database for Agencies

My idea is to create an Government skill and/or Project database for use for internal agencey projects. What problem are you trying to solve? At any given moment each agency has over a hundred individual internal projects going on. To get these completed in most cases offices solely use talent within their office. I propose that we create either a talent pool database that associates skills with each divisions employee ...more »
