My idea is to get rid of Social Security's lump sum death payment. Part of the original purpose of the lump sum death payment was to increase incentives for reporting the death of a relative. Standardize the format of Social Security numbers. Currently, we sometimes use a dash (xxx-xx-xxxx), sometimes a space(xxx xx xxxx), and sometimes we run all 9 digits together (xxxxxxxxx). Pick a format and fit all technology to be the same so that cut and paste features always work. Will save a lot of time!
To limit government agencies to purchase items from specific GSA contracted vendors (because they are a small, or veteran owned business) puts a strain on tax payer’s wallets. If the contracts were with the manufactures directly, where we don’t have to pay the distributers markup or even the small business owner’s markup, we could buy supplies/goods alot cheaper. We currently at Social Security Administration 800# number send out form IRS w-4v (Request for change in voluntary tax witholding) to those who request witholding over the phone. When we recieve the form back at the 800# number, we input the witholding. There has got to be a linked up connection with Social Security and FTC, live. When identity theives take someone's ssn, there has got to be a live alert connected to the social security numbers such as a passcode, they can call in and block access to their number being used for anything from the point of losing their number/card/or victim of a crime. I worked in the Regional Office in Atlanta. There are too many people who walk around and do nothing compared to what is being done in the field offices. Those people are GS-13 and up. SSA is building a new site, from scratch for about $50 million dollars. It would be cheaper and faster to take one of the vacant buildings in this Baltimore area, gut it, update the electronic and safety features and put that building into the system for our use and have space to house all of our departments rather than lease out buildings, eliminating scattered campuses all over the area. Currently Social Security allows for employees to be advanced 80 hours of annual leave. The employees are allowed to repay this advanced annual leave over the course of their employment. Borrowing leave time when we receive an already excessive amount of leave is a waste of government funds. It makes the leave system work like a no interest loan and leads to abuse of the system. Allow Federal employees to choose if they would like to have a scheduled day off without pay once a week or once every other week while still keeping their positions, duties, and benefits. Make this an option as an alternative work schedule.
I see an incredible amount of useful items getting excessed, everything from furniture to IT equipment. Why not have a web site where these items can be posted so that others can get them? This will keep expenditures down because employees won't be purchasing something that someone else just excessed.
SSA and other government agencies use a lot of ink to print out retirement annoucement boards for individuals who are retiring. Colored printer ink is very expensive. The boards are numerous and staffed employees are dedicated to producing these boards, which are then spread out throughout the workplace.
