STOP THE INSANITY! Why Throw Away $$$ Billions???

Why does a completely tax exempt organization voluntarily throw away billions of dollars by paying taxes on travel? I travel a lot for the Navy and detest that taxes for TDY travel expenses are charged to my government credit card. Though the Government Treasury will get the taxes back, for the Navy and the Program Office (PMA), those funds are lost. Those lost and unrecoverable funds, which can quickly add up to billions, ...more »

Anonymous Interviews for all jobs- SAVE EEOC COMPLAINTS!

Too often high-ranking officials choose those most like them for promotions and unfortunately discriminate against more qualified minorities. Perhaps it is time for others outside the region to choose who to promote through anonymous interviews, thus race and ethnicity are not a part of the hiring decision. Such methods are used when submitting dissertations for doctorate degrees. The dissertation is not judged by "who" ...more »

Implement smarter workstation replacement policies

It is a given that CPUs need to be replaced every so often to accommodate software upgrades and improve processing speeds. (Perhaps it is true that some agencies, such as SSA, replace them too frequently, but that is the subject of other SAVE Award ideas so I will not get into that here.) However, computer monitors have longer life cycles and so whenever agencies do a workstation replacement they should not simply replace ...more »

Limit NASA Sponsored Summits

NASA sponsors several summits that are not directly related to NASA's mission. For example, the NASA IT Summit. Although this summit may be useful to those in the IT community, NASA is not in the business of developing IT. If we are serious about saving money, then these types of activities that do not relate to NASA's core mission, should be canceled or held less frequently. Another alternative would be to hold on-line ...more »

Centralize USG Procurement & Erase Unintentional Competition

We all know the USG’s Federal agencies, departments, bureaus, contractors etc. spend billions of dollars annually on the procurement of simple goods to run their offices and in-field operations. These are basic products (paper, pens, power cords, post-its etc.) which any entity - public or private - requires to conduct a successful business. The items are mostly small in per-unit-price, yet when extrapolated to support ...more »

Expiring money

It seems rediculous that money is tagged with a lifespan. Frequently, when a contractor is efficient and less money is used than estimated it is impossible to move the money on to another contract because it is "old", more than 2-years and thus that money is lost or used up on less important needs because it would otherwise be lost. The system was set up for old style purchasing agents. However current needs related ...more »

Hire the Best Candidate for Filling Federal Jobs

The Federal Government should not hire employees just because they meet a quota.

I've seen too many employees hired to meet a targeted category, who were totally unable to do the job. Some were eventually terminated, some still working.

By getting the best qualified candidates, we would cut out the waste in money used to train, and give the American Taxpayers the Federal Government that they expect and deserve.

Travel Pay Over Paid

Many people are very aware of the abuse of travel pay by many veterans. Some say it should be eliminated but that will most likely not happen anytime in the near future. I am a nurse in Primary Care at a VA and witness and report this abuse frequently. Many veterans truly need help to get to their appointments and developing our own transportation system, as others suggested would also cost a great deal. For the fastest ...more »

Incentivize reduced hotel costs on government travel

Given that there are fixed upper limits on the allowable per diem costs for a hotel, allow government travelers to save part of the difference between their actual hotel rate and the limit for that location. Allowing those on travel to save 10% of this difference would provide a financial incentive to look for lower hotel rates. The government would save the difference.

Reduce water use and cost for same by a simple change.

In my building, and presumably in others constructed by and/or maintained by GSA, the toilet flushing mechanism is controlled by an infrared sensor that automatically flushes, whether the timing of that is correct or not. That often results in wasted use of water due to multiple flushes. If the circuit controlling those sensors were to be turned off, and control of the timing and number of flushes were thus returned ...more »

Government of the People, By the People, For the People

These words were spoken by Abraham Lincoln in the Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863. Here we are in the United States 147 years, 260 days later. We are watching Congress. At this second, we are $14,546,716,998,177 in debt. It took me 6 seconds to type that number, and the debt raised $262,554(Over 260 THOUSAND DOLLARS!!!) while I was typing. We have to get a handle on our spending in the Federal Government. ...more »
