Single Online Education Resource

Combine the Navy, Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard online training programs into a single web-enabled entity. Having multiple agencies and organizations manage the education of our combat personnel is inefficient and highlights the disparity and unfocused attempts the different services take on online education. It is simply a waste of time and money to break up online education into different areas for ...more »

Eliminate the Department of Education

Do away with this agency completey and return the responsbility of education to the states and to the parents of children. Maintain a staff to run the Pell Grant program and do away with the rest. Having national standards for education is a complete waste of time. Education should be focused on developing an individual students talents instead of a broad liberal arts education. Having someone focus on a specific ...more »

Denying Benefits to Actively Wanted Fugitive Felons

The USDA, VA, and SSA have programs, which deny benefits to persons who are wanted in other jurisdictions in local, state, and federal databases for felony offenses. These absconders from justice may use the benefits they receive to further their escape from facing justice and should not be entitled to taxpayer funds until their obligations have been satisfied. This program if implemented at ED is a direct alignment ...more »

National student record system

The federal government, states, and school districts have spent billions on creating/purchasing software to monitor education. This has led to over a hundred different systems that do not interact well with each other. States then spend millions to integrate district systems with state systems and millions to integrate state systems to federal reporting. Then, when a student crosses state, and sometimes district, lines ...more »

Homeless Empowerment Centers

With the rise of unemployment and thousands of Americans living on the streets, I think the government could save costs by creating a program very similar to the CCC (Circa 1933-1944) that will use existing housing areas and create large centers whose sole purpose is to give homeless Americans of all ages a place to sleep, eat, learn and work. The centers will provide food, water, housing and medical care to help get ...more »

Stop Minting Penny and Nickel

Call it the Small Change Act, the most a person would ever have to contribute on a single transaction would be 9 cents. I once read that the cost of making the penny and nickel, both outweigh the actual value of the coin. My proposal is similar to what some banks are starting to offer, in a keep the change program. On all *CASH* purchases, the total price, after sales tax, would be rounded up to the nearest amount, ...more »

Prisons

LABOR-Develop a reasonable labor requirement to cut cost the Govt, would otherwise spend on Fed employees, contractors, or private sector. Since they are receiving better healthcare than most, cable which some still can't afford, and exercise equipment which some can't afford or are to busy working to use, we might as well educate them and give them a skill so they may positively contribute to society. Maybe in the process ...more »

Education

Maybe if we made more of a commitment such as; funding, programs, research, improvement/quality, dedication, out reach, promoting, rewarding, sponsored competitions, awards, etc, we might be able to get some smart kids to become smart adults and fix some of these issues we have now.

Better Management of Pell Grant Payments

Students that receive Pell Grants often have other sources of financial aid (such as state-funded programs and scholarships). Students often end up with more college funding than college bills. The surplus can be in the thousands of dollars. Students use this money to buy cars, high-end electronics, and other luxury items not associated with college. This is done at the taxpayer’s expense. Pell Grants should be paid directly ...more »

Remove Soda Machines from Schools

I suggest to make it a condition for federal funding that public schools do not serve or have soda machines available on the school grounds. The USA is facing a obesity epidemic. One of the leading causes is the amount of sugar in Soda. The medical costs are stagering to treat all the people with diseases that are caused by obesity, such as diabetes, heart conditions, and strokes. This would save millions from Gov't ...more »

Locate more federal research positions at American universities

A large number of federal research positions are located at national labs. National labs have a higher billing rate than most universities. (An example would be a 100 - 200% billing rate at a national lab vs. 50 - 75% at a university.) Locating the researchers at an American university will also allow students better opportunities to work with the agencies they wish to work for after graduation. Undergraduate and graduate ...more »

Foreign Students

American education is by itself a big incentive for foreign students. They may not mind, if they could afford, to be paying their way through schooling in the USA.

Otherwise create loans for them like all Americans kids already need to get, so as to encourage and retain brilliant students from other countries.

End the Department of Education

Statistics show that many countries exceed the USA when it come to public education. Furthermore, statistics show that since the creation of the Department of Education, education scores in the USA have gone down. It is time to decentralize our public education and stop wasteful spending.

Educator Salaries - DODEA

Why are teacher, principals and superintendent salaries who work overseas not being frozen since the Dept. of Defensed Education Activity is under the Dept. of Defense? Everyone elses salary as a civilian under DOD is being frozen? Teachers are being cut from jobs in the USA. Obama said all government workers have to sacrifice because people in the private sector are hurting. I don't see any educators pockets being ...more »
