Federal Employee Video Testimony

Routinely the DOJ and US Attorneys Office will subpoena Federal employees to testify in cases outside of the employee's geographical work area. These cases can often be cross country in nature as currently my office on the West Coast is working to find funding to send an employee to the East Coast for under one hour of general background testimony. A cross country flight and hotel for less than one hour of general testimony.... more »

American SWAG Only

SWAG Stuff We All Get You have seen it in your unit’s storage or at a recruiting event. We give it out to visitors at trade shows or at an unit open house event. Coffee cups, calendars, key chains, pens, challenge coins, you name it and the only thing in common is the sticker on the bottom; Made in China. It is time to impose immediate legislation that will prohibit the purchase of foreign made items for official... more »

Printing

Stop printing the government budget report. There is no reason every member of Congress and the White House needs a bound copy of the budget. Let them print it off their own printers if they want a hard copy, otherwise just .pdf it.

Two Year Budget Cycle

This is nothing new. Instead of the typical one year budget cycle, I suggest a two year cycle. This would cut down on budget hearings and better stabilize longer-term planning and contracts. For the implementation period, we would simply take the first year's budget and multiply that by the projected inflation rate for the second year and combine the total for our 2 year budget. For emergencies, there is the supplemental... more »

Reduce software expenses with open source software and standards

Currently, the U.S. government spends in excess of $1 billion annually to license software -- software that produces documents that are difficult to access after a few years because the new version of the software often doesn't work with the older documents. Since the document formats are proprietary, we have no way to access these documents other than by maintaining the unsupported older software. This has made transparency... more »

Cut out the Middleman for purchasing

We continue to use Lockheed Martin as our main supplier for equipment (computers, etc) and we pay 2x as much as retail, not too mention a monthly service charge for support. This is just not necessary and the support should be based on a per call basis. If i never have issues with my computer, why should i be charged a monthly fee...since i never contact support?

National Weather Service budget like the Post Office- Sell Svc's

The following may or may not be possible. One way to reduce the NWS 'public burden' budget is to allow NWS to 'charge' for the 'data' it collects and disseminates to the private sector. Currently it does so, free of charge. Prviate Sector (News Agencies, TV/Radio, Internet companies then charge the end-users for the free service that they receive from NWS). NWS Union may 'stop' this. NWS Mission is listed below. "The... more »

Single Online Education Resource

Combine the Navy, Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard online training programs into a single web-enabled entity. Having multiple agencies and organizations manage the education of our combat personnel is inefficient and highlights the disparity and unfocused attempts the different services take on online education. It is simply a waste of time and money to break up online education into different areas for... more »

Consolidation of CBP and TSA Bonded Facility and Cargo Operation

Prior to the creation of the DHS, the former US Customs Service was the primary entity for inspecting inbound and outbound foreign cargo at US International airports as well as compliance and control of related bonded facilities. The events of September 11, 2001 resulted in the creation of DHS as well as the TSA with the consolidation of the Customs Service into CBP. Since 2001 the TSA has grown and expanded in mission... more »

Rollover Budget Initiative (RBI)

The Rollover Budget Initiative (RBI) would allow units to maintain their annual budgets without being penalized for not fully utilizing the last year’s budget. Any remaining money from a fiscal year would be the base amount for the next fiscal year, which will then have additional money added to meet the unit’s requested budget. For example, if a unit requests $10,000 and has $2,000 left over from the previous year, that... more »

Alternating - Light Bulbs (Turn off every other bulb).

We may be using Fluorescent light bulbs, but we should continue to alternate bulb use like we did prior to using Fluorescent light bulbs. We should keep some lights bulbs Off while others light bulbs are On (alternating bulbs). Thus still providing enough lighting to do the job while conserving Electricity; Reducing lighting where necessary.

Change Building Temperatures

Require warmer facility temperatures in summer and cooler facility temperatures in winter. Encourage people to dress appropriately for the season. Most facilities could change their temperatures a degree or two with little difference in occupant comfort. Over the entire federal government a huge cost savings can be recognized. Unoccupied spaces can be adjusted more significantly.

Turn off computer monitors at night.

Turn off computer monitors at night. Computer monitors can always be turned off at night. Computer upgrades can occur with monitor screens switched off. Leaving computer monitors on at all times is a huge waste of energy and dollars. It is completely unneccessary!! Let's save those dollars! Let's save that energy! It will also cut our greenhouse gas emissions!

Cut Gov't Travel Budgets - Too many free vacations!

I know folks like to travel - but - in the Federal Gov't folks travel "just because they can" and the money is there - many trips are unnecessary to complete the mission. Extra "offsite" meetings at resorts, shopping for conferences just to go to a fun city for a week, travelling 3000 miles for a 2 hour meeting, all that is nice - but it's paid by taxpayer money and in this time of need that's where there is a lot of... more »
