Cap Case Action Attorney Fees

SSA caps the fees for at attorneys at the lesser of $6000 or 25% of backdue money. If a similar cap could be found for class action damages, "clients" could get settlements for more that $10.

Abbreviated opinions should be used whenever possible

I understand courts of appeals aren't thrilled by the idea, but trial courts should, to the extent possible, decide motions by saying something like "For the reasons noted by the government in its memorandum at pages 4- 7, the motion is granted" or "is denied." This could be especially useful in orders on motions for summary judgment. I've recently seen some orders going close to 100 pages long. How much trial court time... more »

Bankruptcy Court Waste

I worked for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for two years. The main office is in Shreveport, LA. There are too many supervisors. Individuals are being promoted to supervisor because they are close friends with the Chief Deputy. Such fraternization is illegal and should be investigated. It is a common practice to hire employees that are NOT needed because the Clerk wants to SPEND his entire budget. Personnel at this... more »

Software updates/and Hardware

Every 6 months a new softeware comes out. The military and contractors need to be on the same page yes standerized. To go a bet futher, do not buy the every 6 months or year. Only every 3 years, but to have everyone change at the same time. Biggest problem is having all agencies to change at the same time. To have the contractors do data on the same software and hardware to make everyone one the same page. Simple... more »

Pay Once; Not Three Times, For Same Thing

Did you know that the federal government often pays its court reports three times for the same service? First, the district courts pay court reporters their annual salary and benefits. In return, court reporters transcribe all public proceedings before each district judge, and provide those judges with transcripts when requested. Second, in a case in which a criminal is represented by a federal defender or court-appointed... more »

Eliminate Judicial System

The Judicial System is broken and does not serve American society. There is no sense in spending money on something that doesn't accomplish anything. If a deterrent is necessary to reduce crime, have a lottery for jail time instead of a trail. Sure, innocent people are punished and the criminals run free - same as now at less cost.

No More Pay For Rep - More Phone and Video Hearings

As I process the travel reimbursement for REPRESENTATIVES here in my office, I am apalled at how much money our agency could save if we imposed a rule of travel for out-of-state attorneys. Air travel is too expensive, too risky (missed hearings). The attorney out-of-state should be fully liable for the monies to travel to the hearing since we can provide electronic hearings at this point.

Penalize Immigration Lawyers for Frivolous Lawsuits

The government is currently wasting millions processing frivolous immigration lawsuits being initiated by shady lawyers taking advantage of their clients. This is particularly true for those seeking asylum. Start reporting these guys to the state bar, strip them of their license, and charge them court costs after a pattern of frivolous lawsuits. Too many are just able to continue practicing with no penalty. Establish... more »

DOJ Restitution Cases

Change Court House instructions to indicate at minimum that the Account Name, SSN, Docket Nr and/or Case Nr be indicated on EVERY CHECK that is mailed under the Criminal Restituion process to stop payments from being listed as unknown and making more work that is costly trying to determine where the payments can be applied. Many of these checks are over $10,000 and we do not want to missapply such payments

Unclog Federal Courts

To make the federal court system more responsive, add a new layer. Bring back traveling judges that go to areas where caseload require more judges to hold hearings. Hopefully a speedier system would keep people from "shopping venues" and causing more appeals. A faster response would cut down on federal detainees waiting to hearings.

Library Books

Eliminate hard cover legal research books, everything is on the internet and all the law clerks research from there now. In fact, not all law clerks even know how to use the books nowadays.

Re-vamp the "e-Juror" system

Every spring in the District of New Jersey 100k Juror Questionnaires are sent via snail mail to prospective jurors. Once the potential jurors receive their questionnaire they have the option to submit their answers online in the current e-juror system or mail back their questionnaires with hand written answers. At 44 cents per questionnaire sent the District of New Jersey must spend $44k every year on postage. Let’s... more »
