Both attorney representatives and non-attorney representatives currently receive travel reimbursement from the Social Security Administration for participation in a hearing before an Administrative Law Judge ("ALJ"). The agency recently reduced the amount of travel reimbursement for representatives, which does not appear to have impacted the hearing process. By eliminating travel reimbursement for representatives entirely, ...more »

Standardize the format of Social Security numbers. Currently, we sometimes use a dash (xxx-xx-xxxx), sometimes a space(xxx xx xxxx), and sometimes we run all 9 digits together (xxxxxxxxx). Pick a format and fit all technology to be the same so that cut and paste features always work. Will save a lot of time!
We currently at Social Security Administration 800# number send out form IRS w-4v (Request for change in voluntary tax witholding) to those who request witholding over the phone. When we recieve the form back at the 800# number, we input the witholding. It would save money, time, and postage if after we properly and securely identify callers like we already do each time we make a change in a Social Security record, that ...more »

Currently Social Security allows for employees to be advanced 80 hours of annual leave. The employees are allowed to repay this advanced annual leave over the course of their employment. Borrowing leave time when we receive an already excessive amount of leave is a waste of government funds. It makes the leave system work like a no interest loan and leads to abuse of the system. Advanced annual leave should be removed ...more »
Allow Federal employees to choose if they would like to have a scheduled day off without pay once a week or once every other week while still keeping their positions, duties, and benefits. Make this an option as an alternative work schedule.
I see an incredible amount of useful items getting excessed, everything from furniture to IT equipment. Why not have a web site where these items can be posted so that others can get them? This will keep expenditures down because employees won't be purchasing something that someone else just excessed.
SSA and other government agencies use a lot of ink to print out retirement annoucement boards for individuals who are retiring. Colored printer ink is very expensive. The boards are numerous and staffed employees are dedicated to producing these boards, which are then spread out throughout the workplace. I do not begrudge the annoucement of the ending of a successful career, however, perhaps a website for each agency ...more »
I would like to make a suggestion on an idea that has been previously suggested; prison facilities get incentive pay by informing the Social Security Administration of prisoners who receive Social Security Benefits. My idea would to either elimanate the incentive pay or reduce the amount.
Achieve major savings & efficiencies by careful inventory, study & comparison of goals & purposes of all government programs. To maximize early benefits, begin with major programs. Group those with similar purposes or that serve similar populations. Design business processes to do a task once to support multiple needs. Rationalize programs benefits to ensure their cumulative impact on individuals & groups does not combine ...more »
SSA sends out millions of mailings each year. The vast majority of the mailings include a sheet of paper that outlines the "Privacy Act/Paperwork Reduction Act Statement". It's wasteful (and counterproductive) to include a sheet of paper solely for the purpose of informing our claimants that we are reducing paper usage. An additional sheet of paper sent out millions of times costs money in terms of reams of paper purchased, ...more »
Social Security issues thousands of Social Security Cards each day. The public does not regard them as something they need to hold on to because they are free to replace. It could be changed so that the first card is free and for any additional cards there is a fee. If Social Security were to charge even just $5 that would save thousands on the paper, ink , postage and the money charged would go to offset the cost of ...more »
