Ink and Paper Waste

We fill out a report of patient's condition which is in duplicate and is faxed twice a day to the NOD and at nights is taken down to the NOD. Each unit does this. It seems feasible to develop a spreadsheet on the computer and email them to the NOD. This would save on ink, paper, and duplicate forms. The request for overtime sheets are also faxed to three different numbers and could also be developed into a spreadsheet ...more »

Federal Spectrum Leases versus sale

The President has proposed to make 500MHz of Federal spectrum available for wireless carriers to expand broadband internet and wireless available to more of the country. Instead of a "sale", the government should lease the spectrum to wireless carriers for 15-20 years with additional options to extend the lease at the government's discretion. This concept would provide the government almost the same revenue as the auction ...more »

Hotel Tax reduction- State Taxes

Most States Exempt Federal Employees from paying state taxes for hotel accomadations; if you present a state hotel tax exemption form at the time of check-in. There is no requirement to ask for the exemption, and finding the forms can be difficult if you are travelling out of the state you are based in. The Office of Management and Budget could require that all travellers submit a tax exempt form for hotel stays. ...more »

Budget Surplus Incentive

Instead of "use or lose" the government should incentivize agencies for having money left over. If an agency has money left over they should be able to keep half of the excess plus the same budget as the year before. The other half of the excess could go to a debt service fund to pay down the debt. So if an agency was given a $100,000 budget for a year and spent $80,000 the agency would have a $110,000 budget the next ...more »

Extreme Makeover: Budget Edition

According to www.treasurydirect.gov, the national debt hit an all time high of $14.3 trillion in 2010, and it is now in public interest that we begin the “tightening of the belts”. Commonality of Computer Systems

At NASA MSFC, we have two personal computer systems; 1) PC and 2) MAC. This creates data transfer issues, two support infrastructures, and the MAC is more expensive. This seems to be a person perference and does not make any business sense. We need to decide as an government agency which system we want to use. We are changing contracts for computer systems this month, now is the time to change to one or the other. ...more »

In Vessel Composter

Mandate the purchase of In-Vessel Composters at all DoD installations that have housing and dining facilities. This idea falls under cost avoidance. DoD installations pay for waste disposal, and an in-vessel composter would pay for itself in less than 4-7 years (depending on solid waste disposal prices at each location). The composter would also provide mulch and landscaping materials that would provide further cost ...more »

US Govt Performance & Accountability Rpts: Add "Cost Savings"

US Government Federal Agencies are required to submit this report annually to OMB. Format is standardized on topics to cover. Budget and financial performance data is also included in report. What appears to be missing is "Cost Savings Results." Requiring each Federal agency to include this could summarize facts on actions to reduce budgets and not continuously growing budgets. OMB staff would have quick look area ...more »

All govt dept's spending should be dynamically updated to respective dept. web portal and availabile for public. Public goes through the spending and can question each penny spent by authorities which brings accountability to every nickel and dime spent and that fixes excessive spending.
