Require everyone who is responsible for making arrangements for meetings/training which include employees who travel from out of town, to find less expensive locations for those events. A co-worker recently attended a week long training class with employees from around the country. It was held in Washington D. C., the government rate for the hotel was $210.00 per night for each participant (approximately 30 people).... more »

We need to cut spending year around, not wait until we approach the end of the FY year where the agency will then spend needlessly. Once we are certain of funds we obligated for the year will not be needed/used, perhaps in staffing, a project, training, etc., we can then have the option to return those funds. A percentage of these funds returned can be placed in two seperate year-around accounts, one account belonging... more »
The PAC Program is an innovative online approach to physical security that enables DOI’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (OHSES) to effectively pre-assess the security of federal facilities while reducing burden to the government, staff and tribal community. The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) oversees 6,953 facilities. Of these, 4,502 serve the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) including 187 schools... more »
To encourage the telework program, stop subsidies for commuting. To encourage electronic meetings, lower the per diem rate for travel
I believe we (the Federal Government) need to become the leader in our efforts to recycle and find as many ways as we can to further the "Going Green" effort. It should not be thought of as an option. Recycling means recycling,,, not just the things that are convienant, but the hard items too. There should not be one aluminum can ending up in a landfill coming from a goverment facility!!!!! Recycling Cans, the ones with... more »
I went to school at U of H in Houston. As a student, I had to complete several interships at local agencies. Not only is it good experience for the intern, but the company (SSA) doesn't have to pay out any salaries or benefits. Utilizing college level interns would not only free up CR's and SR's to do more complex duties, but the agency would save on hiring and long periods of training for new employees. How to utilize... more »
Supervisory FTOs serve a region and should have their office located in the region they were hired to serve. Instead they are located in Albuquerque and spend money traveling to their region to do their jobs, approximately $300,000 per Supervisor per year in travel $$ x 6 Supervisors is a lot of money spent traveling. Require the supervisors to have their office in the region they were hired to serve.
We issue checks to hundreds of New US Citizens over 65 that have never worked in the US. If their family brings them to the US then they should be responsible to care for their aging family members with their own funds. It is unfair to those who were born in the US.
We need better water management A canal system would reroute excess water, ad to the beauty of industrial areas, and give us an alternative transportation option.
Help fund burro and wild horse projects by soliciting donations from the public.
I have had the frustration when trying to purchase supplies and equipment of researching the lowest cost available on items only to have our procurement office purchase items at a higher cost because they were being purchased from a small business or disadvantaged business rather than a large company. This seems an absurd waste of tax dollars that can add up to a significant amount across the federal government each... more »
Delegate to all branches to use USPS for their shipping needs. Whether it is a overnight letter or product coming from one of our many vendors, specify using USPS. With the financial problems USPS is having, negotiate good rates (compared to UPS, Fed-Ex and most trucking companies. This would benefit one of our own branches and generate more income that is desperately needed to keep USPS solvent.
A lot of employees spend a lot of time on the DOILearn courses that cost a lot of money to create. However, when these are listed on an application as a substitute for lack of experience and ignored, it amounts to a lot of wastered government time, money, and effort training its employees. More people would respect DOILearn and Skillsoft if taking the courses actually could result in a supervisory position when the... more »
Stop charging National Parks travel fees(Govtrip) for in house travel, ie backcountry. $15.00 a pop takes away from the budget and could be spent better within. It's not like we call anyone to do this.
Same with other travel. Especially when the employee can do it on their own and AGAIN SAVE money.
Look into reforming or better yet, doing away with GSA. I would bet the origional idea of having a government division that looks out for government purchasing was a great one. But now, it seems like anything you get from a GSA vendor, is "expensive junk", which more times than not, usually has to be purchased in bulk. If you can find, exactly what you need, at a better price elsewhere and you only need one, (not fifty),... more »
