The agency that I work for generates a lot of letters/correspondence. For every original letter sent out, at least three or more agency copies need to be made. Instead of a Program Assistant making three copies of the original letter and mailing or routing the copies, the Agency should use the Scanning function built into the copiers, which allows the letter to be scanned and e-mailed to agency staff right from the ...more »
Instead of people approved for the Voluntary Leave Transfer (VLT)program sending out mass e-mail messages to everyone in their local/state/regional office, HUD, and other federal agencies with a VLT program, should provide a link on their agency home pages where people approved for VLT donations can post their story, a picture, and other information that they want to. This would eliminate a significant number of e-mail ...more »
HUD/FHA currently operates three major call centers independently, all responding to issues related to Single Family Housing: the FHA Resource Center, the Multifamily Clearinghouse, and the National Servicing Center. While the Multifamily Clearinghouse and National Servicing Center are specialized, providing information related to their programs, the FHA Resource Center serves as a resource on a variety of HUD programs, ...more »
Every year millions of unspent grant dollars stay inactive in expired grants until the formal steps are taken between the awarding agency and the grantee. The process: The awarding governmental agency notifies the grantee in writing that the inactive funds will be recaptured. The grantee signs a closeout certificate and returns to the awarding agency signifying they agree. This process only takes about 2 to 3 weeks ...more »
i know multiple families on section 8 housing. some are in need of help because they are not able to work. others have no problem working but choose not to because they don't have a reason to since the government is supporting them. i believe that individuals and families on section 8 should be limited to a time limit of how long they can receive these benefits with the stipulations that they are pursuing work unless ...more »
My idea to save the government money is to totally revamp the travel system and the way federal government employees' travel. To do this would be to start with the basics. I think that either each federal agency should have their own travel department or there should be a completely new government agency created just for the purpose of federal government travel (which I would be more than happy to spearhead this movement ...more »
Federal Housing Administration of HUD issues debentures in lieu of cash payments for claims to the lender of the mortgage based the existing law. The interest rates can be as high as over 13%, a very high cost to the federal government.
The old law needs to be changed to save interest expense for the government.

Mr. Secretary, HUD has some very gifted, highly qualified, highly productive individuals with many years of outside government experience but lack the inside connections to advance above GS-12 and GS-13. You should computerize employee resumes so you are able to identify these individuals and directly hire them to fill positions. Unless this agency stops the good ole boy and girl system of promoting the wrong people ...more »
Dear Mr. Secretary, We at HUD are willing to support your call for doing more with less. I suggest we set the example with the President, Vice President and your fellow cabinet Secretaries by immediately reducing our workforce by 2000 employees or approximately 25%, by offering minimum buyouts of $25,000 to our entire HUD family to be off the rolls no later than 12/31/11. Those remaining employees will make you proud ...more »
Utilize benefits of technology. Many technological aplications can be used and/or developed to handle many of the functions for processing work. The charm of inner cities has long lost the beauty of their cultural history. Because of lower rents, rural and foriegn people hoping to try for a better life in the city are drawn to the inner city. There was a time these areas had distinct identities that superseded the metropolitan address. For example, Harlem was though of as Harlem before it was a neighborhood of New York City, and a small neighborhood in my town ...more »
Government-wide, millions can be saved by ending the misuse of training money. At the end of most Fiscal Years, management finds itself with a surplus of training money. In order to justify receiving funding in the new Fiscal Year at the same or higher level, management feels that it must use all the funds at its disposal. The result is a flurry of training activity in the closing weeks of the Fiscal Year that is unwanted ...more »
Have lenders appraise FHA foreclosed properties in declining neighborhoods upon acquisition. If the as-is appraised value is lower than the average holding cost, FHA should pay for demolition at this time and sell the parcel to a local land bank or government for a minimal price. HUD/FHA often pays the lender for property preservation in excess of the appraised value and holding costs. Holding costs for HUD/FHA are ...more »
