Simplified procurement of IT maintenance using Purchase Cards

Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) and government Purchase Card (credit card) policy currently preclude the use of Purchase Cards to buy annual IT hardware and software maintenance or support. This leads to the use of purchase orders instead. As someone who purchases such services for an IT-intensive organization, I find myself submitting requisitions for as little as $50 or $60. Given the weeks of delay and hundreds ...more »

Restricting hours of field office operations

Employees in field offices could work 4 10 hour days and be open to the public from 9AM-3:00PM. It would save thousands in operational costs and give employees time to complete noninterviewing work tasks thus eliminating the need for overtime which would also save thousands of dollars across the board.

Elimination of Combined Family Max

Eliminate the combined family max comp for RSI/Disability benefits. This is a comp prone to error and thus overpayment, it is either not done properly, not done at all, or not suspended in a timely manner-many times resulting in overpayment to the beneficiaries. Not to mention the loss time spent by employees in following up on this comp to either be processed or suspended. Eliminate this comp-just pay on the higher ...more »

The new situation in the Economy has created many opportunities for investors in the real estate world. The US Government is leasing Buildings, Land and Real Estate Property paying millions of dollars every year to private organizations or individuals. Canceling unnecessary and mis-targeted print subscriptions

Two weeks ago I sent a Center-wide email recommending individuals not involved in information technology, cancel their GSN (Government Security News) print magazine subscription (a gov’t IT-related publication) by calling the Subscription Office's phone number which was buried in the back of the magazine. If hundreds or thousands of FDA or HHS or US gov't-wide employees cancel these oftentimes mis-targeted publications, ...more »

Personal Assistant

I receive a lot of mail in my current job. A lot of it is catalogs. Currently 50 people work in my office, and the mail is full of catalogs because I work in the Office of Acquisitions. Every time I receive a catalog, I ask the employee if he or she would like to keep the subscription. If the subscription is declined, I call the number on the catalog and speak to someone. I have that particular person's name removed ...more »

Respiratory Acetylcistene use

There has been a nation wide shortage of Acetylsistene in 4ml bottles. Typically patients that need this for respiratory need use 2-3 milileters at a time between 2- 4 times a day.During this shortage the way it has been dispensed is in 30 mililiter bottles. The expiration date is 72 hours after opening the bottle. In my humble opinion it would be of more benefit to have pharmacy draw these up in 3 mililiter syringes ...more »

Downsizing of gov

Just as the government expanded,it can also contract.I live and work in a metro area where there are 5 Social Security field offices. I'm sure that by closing one or more in each metro area that the agency can combine resources and employees into less offices and save money.

No government assistance for people that have luxury items

I know many people, including in my own family, that receive government assistance for food, daycare, WIC, etc. It amazes me how they can qualify for these benefits and still walk around with an iphone/blackberry, flat screen tvs, cable, manicures etc. If you can afford the luxury items, you can afford to pay for your own groceries or rent. I don't have any of these items and I make a good living.

Saving Energy During Hot Weather

I work in a location with floor-to-ceiling windows. If half of the ceiling light fixtures were removed, or if we could turn off half of the lights, this would save energy. I don't think this would not cause a reading problem, since we receive a large amount of natural light.

Furniture

We purchase so much furniture for offices and conference rooms. There are purchases of office chairs that cost over 400 dollars. In addition of furniture purchases for employees, there is a high turnover of employees to newer positions and the chairs are left behind or put in hallways. We dont have 400 dollar chairs at home, so why at work. We should not be allowed to use corporate businesses (such as staples or office ...more »

Got Power?

Waste incineration can be done at the massive federal complexes like already done at hospitals. Also being done in Virginia. Set up furnaces to incinerate the office waste including print and then use steam turbines to generate electricity. Incinerate papers un-shredded (!) as well as those daily litter generated at our workplaces, cafeterias and yard care. For now they end up in landfills someplace far away, ‘shredded’ ...more »
