Simple Computer Maintenance

Clean dust out of computer heat sinks. Run defragmentation and error check programs on hard drives.

My agency’s computer systems are grinding to a halt while we wait for new systems (and corresponding funding). New life can be breathed into existing system by performing simple common sense maintenance. CPU power can be improved by simply cleaning out six years worth of dust from the CPU heat sink.

Small Business Contracts

Fundamentally change how contracts under $100,000 dollars are awarded. Register all American small business (ie, like a GSA schedule) and allow directed awards up to $100K to these businesses. Stipulate that at least 70% of the work has to be performed by the prime. This would save months of work which in some cases could be more than the total award of the contract.

US Postal Service as Default Carrier

Grant the U.S. Postal Service the necessary infrastructure to be the federal government's go-to domestic shipper instead of giving contracts to Fed Ex or UPS. USPS, after all, is a highly capable government agency and it makes good sense to recognize and utilize this service, particularly at a time when postal revenue is decreasing. Doing so could save federal agencies money on shipping and even save postal jobs in ...more »

Saving travel funds

When booking flights for government travel we are required to use a travel agency (ADTRAV). Most often we find our own flights on a commercial website (e.g. travelocity, expedia) and submit this to the travel agent. The cost of the flight is always significantly more through the travel agent than that posted on the commercial website. I propose that government employees be allowed to book their own flights through a commercial ...more »

Sharing Instruments

My department has many instruments (pumps, scientific instruments or other stuff) that are not being used, or sold-just stored in a storage indefinitely. Meanwhile some other department is probably buying the same stuff again. We can make it mandatory to share your unused materials/stuff with other government agencies. Also, we can prohibit departments/groups from buying anything if they can just get it for free from ...more »

Recycling Government Property

I propose that government agencies invoke an active recycling program for obsolete government property, such as computers and equipment, to benefit workplace and community. As technology advances, obsolete equipment and electronics occupying valuable space could be routed to recycling centers, which can safely dispose of or reuse the valuable components. Benefits include newly free workspace, increased productivity, ...more »

Anonymous return of funding to Treasury

Allow agencies to anonymously return funds to the Treasury at the end of the fiscal year. Every year agencies scramble to fully utilize their funds so they are not penalized in the next fiscal year with less funds.

Utilize Amtrak

Make Amtrak a preferred provider for Government travel. Many roadblocks are in place that prevent us from using the Amtrak Acela trains. Often times it is cheaper and more economical time wise to use Acela verses a flight, but the travel bureaus policies make it impossible to choose more economical means.

Agency branding

Large amounts of funds are utilized to brand offices and programs across the federal government (ie, logos, websites, strategy documents, business cards, etc). Millions could be saved by only allowing branding at the Department level.

National Weather Service budget like the Post Office- Sell Svc's

The following may or may not be possible. One way to reduce the NWS 'public burden' budget is to allow NWS to 'charge' for the 'data' it collects and disseminates to the private sector. Currently it does so, free of charge. Prviate Sector (News Agencies, TV/Radio, Internet companies then charge the end-users for the free service that they receive from NWS). NWS Union may 'stop' this. NWS Mission is listed below. "The ...more »

Market Count based employment.

A certain number of hours are not utilized per the time required for someone to show up and use facilities. Also, Certain Government employment has nothing to with the number of people visiting or using government services. The reason this situation exists is due to lack of motivation to do more work than one currently does. On the other hand, when confronted with a requirement that the number of tasks, or people ...more »
