Defensive Driving requirement for all drivers

In my opinion, it should be a requirement for anyone who is driving a GSA vehicle take a defensive driving course prior to driving a GSA vehicle and then once every 2 or 3 years as a refresher course. There are several on USDA Aglearn system that are computer based. This may reduce reduce accidents and cost to the federal government.

Allow use of Digital Signatures on Internal Forms

Eliminating the requirement of a 'wet' ink signature on our forms would result in a monetary savings (ink, paper, copier upkeep/maintenance, use of E-fax accounts, etc). There is also an efficiency arguement to be made by allowing multiple parties to sign digitially no mater where they are located. The use of digital signatures is recognized in several pieces of federal legislation (E-sign) and is even used on court ...more »

Use the correct contract type for the correct task

We are required to us Firm Fixed Price for every single contract award regardless of the tasks being accomplished. Some Information Technology tasks are not suited to FFP. This causes the bidders to all have much higher bids than they would with a suitable contract type, and ends up costing the government more money. We need some flexibility to be able to occasionally not use FFP where it can be demonstrated not to be ...more »

Reduce travel costs

Allow government travelers to use free services like Expedia, hotels.com, airline & hotel websites to directly book airline tickets and hotels using government travel cards. If the cost savings makes sense and follow the regulations, utilize the direct company websites rather than use government travel centers that have been awarded contracts and charge a fee for each trip.

Stop Letting Government Dollars Fly Away

In booking a flight on GovTrip yesterday, the cost of the Government Fare from one city to another was approximately $1500 roundtrip - that same flight could be purchased through Travelocity for $375 roundtrip. As a Federal Manager, it disturbs me each and every time we make travel arrangements because we end up paying significantly more for the same flight because we are required to go through GovTrip. In this particular ...more »

How to save money

I think we can save money by letting each office of the Farm Service Agency find the best price for supplies and etc. We are limited right now to GSA and they are high on some items. Another way the whole government can save is not letting the senate, congressmen and women, etc to use jets, helicopters and government cars for there personal use (vacations, going home for a period of time) - make them use their own cars ...more »

Institute a parking fee for federal offices

Institute a parking fee at all federal buildings that currently have free parking for motor vehicles. Parking fees can be patterned after the US Forest Service trail pass fees, where each site would have a self-service permit system for a daily fee, along with a longer term permit fee for yearly use. Fees could be determined using the Forest Services current fee structure - $5 per day or (is it) $30 per year. Parking ...more »

Save Alot

One way for the government as a whole to save money would be to cut there cost in half by sending documents by mail. From now on start scanning and e-mailing as many documents as possible therefore cutting the cost of mailing. Annually the cost of mailing has went up, do it for 6 months and see how much we save. Have everyone in the government try it. We already have the resources and we do not have to spend anything ...more »

Energy Savings

In buildings we often do not use energy efficient fixtures or light bulbs, in addition we often do not turn off the lights when we leave the room and let our office equipment run all night instead of being turned off. While the equipment goes into sleep mode they still have "vampire lights" on which are lights that use up energy. By having a policy for the last person leaving an office turn off lights and nonessential ...more »

Resell computers

I would like to see employees able to purchase the used computers we use for working when they are replaced with new instead of donating them. If we set a reasonable price and given the opportunity to purchase these I think we would be surprised at the outcome. If they are not all purchased then I would suggest donating them. Thank you.
