Get Lean!

Require that every federal agency adopt lean standards to increase organizational efficiencies.

Lean is a concept used more frequently in business and manufacturing in which all business processes are examined to ensure they add value to customer. In this case the customer is the taxpayer. Do all practices in every federal agency add value to the taxpayer? Adopting lean practices would ensure this were true.

Get a Grip on Airline Travel and Fees

Why is it that when I fly on official government business, I also seem to pay more for my airline ticket than I would if I were buying it privately? The fee we pay the company who sells us these overpriced tickets is at least $14 per transaction. Why not reward federal employees who can get better deals on airlines? Why not let employees book their tickets privately and reimburse them? If an employee can find a cheaper ...more »

Give Federal Agencies More Control of Their Own Budgets

I think there are two ways to give cut costs across all Federal Agencies by giving Federal Agencies more control over their own budgets. 1. Stop the "use it or lose it" mentality. Instead of "punishing" agencies who don’t spend all their allocated funds in one year, by giving them less money the next year, find a way to reward federal agencies who return funds to the treasury. This would encourage agencies to undertake ...more »

ACCOUNTING TECH

EMPLOYEE GOING OUT OF STATE JUST FOR EIGHT HOURS TRAINING AND SPENDING AROUND $1500 OR MORE SHOULD BE STOPPED. GOVERNMENT SHOULD COME IN TO CONTRACT WITH AIRLINE AGENCIES FOR REASONABLE FARES. SOMETIMES THE FARES FROM DALLAS TO COLUMBIA, SC IS AS MUCH AS YOU GO TO INDIA TWICE ROUND TRIP IN THAT KIND OF FARE. GOVERNMENT AGENCIES THAT ARE NOT FRUITFUL, EITHER SHOULD BE COMBINED TO OTHER AGENCIES OR SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN. ...more »

Save Paper (without changing anything!)

At some printers in CNCS Headquarters, your name/work station prints on a separate page before your print order (thus helping to separate your print job from the person before/after you).

This is wasteful.

Self-insuring Airline Retail Sale Ticket Fund Saves Millions

Problem: While GSA’s government-wide travel policies permit Federal employees to take advantage of airlines’ retail sale prices, because the employee must assume risks of cancellation or change fees, employees rarely take advantage of sale ticket prices which are far below the refundable GSA City Pair program fare prices. While city pair fares save as much as 70 percent, that savings is measured against retail fully ...more »

Saving dollars on official travel

I am scheduled to be on official travel in the next month and will be travelling to DC from Ohio. When the travel contractor provided my itinerary, the cost was over $1,000 because there is no GSA contract with any airlines from the Columbus airport to any DC airport. I did an online search and discovered that the cost for that flight if I were able to book it myself was around $200. I will be flying through Baltimore ...more »

Set printers to default to 2-sided copying

In addition to buying duplexing printers, operations staff should be directed to set most printers to automatically default to 2-sided copying. Most copy jobs can be 2-sided but it takes time and effort to manually change each copy job to 2-sided and people forget. Users could still manually change to single sided if necessary.

Electronic Payments

The government should not make any payment by check. Just at my agency, we deal with many checks that are misplaced or lost by the recipient. The electronic payments have much fewer issues and are cheaper for the government to produce. Also, the electronic payments save the government money by requiring less manpower since they don't have to be reissued as often. Social Security payments are required to be made electronically, ...more »

Localize Orientation for VISTA members and empower staff

The current system of orienting VISTA members requires extensive travel, accommodation, and training costs to our agency. The system is complicated by the fact that many members relocate and are required to attend a training at a regional site before heading to their site of service. I would propose that significant costs could be saved by localizing these training's and may ultimately prove to be more useful to the VISTA ...more »
