When I was in college, printer ink was my biggest expense. I changed the default on my printer to the printer quality "draft mode." It used far less ink and substantially lowered my expenses. The print quality, despite being draft, was also good enough for every project I did. I've tried to print on draft mode at work, but I'm only given the options of "best quality" or standard quality. If draft mode was the default... more »

Expedite the use of a “Skype” like tool for USAID – In my previous job, I used this tool to use on-line chat and call for free to 40 projects sites worldwide including subs, to discuss issues, trainings, provide updates, mentor and quickly share info even to the most remote sites. Not only is it free (no telephone bills), it reduced the number of TDYs and improved performance and multi-tasking. This will be very useful... more »
The recruiting team for USAID's Office of Transition Initiatives (OTI) supports the procurement of Personal Service Contractors (PSCs) in order to provide fast, flexible, short-term assistance targeted at key transition needs. Due to the rising popularity of OTI, the recruiting team has had to handle thousands of procurement sensitive documents and provide copies of them to Technical Evaluation Committees. For example,... more »
Eliminate/minimize/truncate the duration of expensive consultancy services. There is greater job knowledgte within the organic organization. Improving knowledge management and motivating organic personnel are two powerful ways of improving performance and goal achievement. After all, what is a consultant, but somebody who borrows your watch to tell you what time of day it is and walks away with your watch.
The amount of cooling (air conditioning) used in the United States is excessive , unwarranted and wasteful. Central air conditioning requires about 50 times as much power as a 75-watt light bulb. Government buildings, instead of serving as models for energy efficiency, are culprits of excessive cooling levels as are most commercial and retail establishments. The Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, DC and... more »
Agancies should post their financial information in real time in the public. This would be true transparency, and would allow people to understand exactly what is being spent where.
Monetization is a process whereby the department of agriculture purchases food in the United States that is then shipped overseas and sold in local markets. The proceeds of these sales are used for foreign assistance programs. A recent GAO audit found that over a 3 year period, $722 million was expended by USDA and USAID and only $503 million was available for foreign assistance programs. This means if the United States... more »
The United States should outsource its prisons and send inmates to locations where they wouldn't have easy access to illegal objects smuggled through the federal systems today.
All escalators that are next to elevators should be shut off to conserve operating energy and maintenance costs. People are able to walk up a flight of stairs. If there is an elevator close enough to accomodate people who can't use stairs, the escalator is redundant. The exercise will also improve people's health, saving on health insurance costs.
Institute a summer dress code at federal agencies so the men don't need the AC so high to make up for them wearing heavy suits. Instead make the buildings less cold to save money and help the environment.
I work for USAID overseas, and frequently the cost for air tickets and hotel reservations obtained through our contracted travel agency (CWL) is extremely higher than the ones we can obtain through the air company’s website or travel websites such as Expedia, Hotwire, Fedrooms, etc. I suggest that agencies may have the option to use website based options to procure travel but the contracted travel agent. Just to cite... more »
The removal of printers from offices would force employees to find new more efficient ways to communicate. The savings from paper and toners could be used to provide ways for those without internet access to get information.
Eliminate disposable paper, plastic, and styrofoam materials in federal cafeterias and tenant kitchens by requiring dishwashing. One standard set of kitchenware could be available for each cafeteria/kitchen to use collectively.
Israel is one of the wealthiest nations in the world with one of the lowest population densities and yet it receives half of the foreign military financing allocated annually by the US for every country in the world. This is approximately 3 billion dollars. On top of that, America provides conditional loan guarantees valued at another 3 billion per year. Given our current economic situation, it is time we use that money... more »
The United States should end all foreign aid to countries we do not have treaties with except in cases of emergencies where we could give humanitarian support of food, water, disaster supplies, and medical supplies. We are sending billions of dollars overseas to some countries that we will not get anything in return with. If we have a treaty with them and can commercially export some commodity from them, or they play... more »
