Currently, the US EPA, Office of Research and Development, wastes millions of dollars in travel support for meetings and training that could be easily performed using video conferencing technologies. To date, ORD has already saved millions of dollars by using video conference facilities located throughout its campuses at HQ and Research Triangle Park and remote locations. The problem is that more money could be saved ...more »

Install LED ligts both inside buildings as well as for street lantern and traffic lights on larger facilities. Both energy savings and life cycle analysis costs savings are significant. It also allows for intelligent lighting systems which shot down when use is not required.
There supposedly is a savings by freezing the pay of GS federal employees. If there is really a savings in doing this then there should also be a savings in cutting taxpayers' money used to pay increases given to Congressional aids. Travel expenses should also be limited. Funds from Federal taxes should not be used for campaign-related activities Congress persons or their staff.

As EPA Region 9 summer interns who’ve grown up in a Web 2.0 World, we feel we have a fresh perspective on how procedures are carried out with new technologies. We were surprised by the sheer amount of paper involved in the hiring process –SF-52, I-9, a physical welcome folder all of which were available online. For a total of 2 million federal employees, this translates into an incredible amount of paperwork and redundancy. ...more »

Not only are laptops portable, it could save printing costs if we carry them to meetings to view agenda, take notes and view presentations. Laptops will make working at an alternate schedule convenient and cheaper especially during periods of disaster i.e hurricane, terroist attacks, etc.

My idea is to establish Federal Employee a term limits, just like military ...more »
The Problem: Responding to traditional notice-and-comment rulemaking required by the Administrative Procedure Act takes a substantial amount of effort for both the agency and submitters. For each rulemaking, the agency must address hundreds and sometimes thousands of comments submitted by the public to determine if the comment is substantive and whether the comment is the same or similar to that of other submissions. ...more »
Yes, I participated, cleaned out my pantry, and feel good about myself. But it shows a bad example to the vox populi. If I were 48 years old, unemployed, unemployable, lost my house, with benefits running out, and found out about stuff like this? I'd be doing more than a slow burn. The message this sends? Highly compensated federal workers are spending time collecting bags of food, and organizing social events on ...more »

It's amazing what supplies some agencies provide. It was like a shopping spree!! Items our office had no use for or things which we had in abundance, (tablets, pens, staplers, etc.) were brought to the "shopping" area and added ...more »
This is an idea from industry ... combine sick leave and annual leave and call it "Personal Leave" This has been shown to reduce the overall absences.
