CANCEL and phase out Welfare and section 8 and food stamps and welfare benefits and low income housing for able bodied working age citizens. Extreme Makeover: Budget Edition

According to www.treasurydirect.gov, the national debt hit an all time high of $14.3 trillion in 2010, and it is now in public interest that we begin the “tightening of the belts”. The US has been faced with a teetering economy that has been trying to stabilize itself. In order for the US to sustain itself we must first begin by addressing the national debt and our current spending practices. A proposal on how the ...more »

Procurement - Buy American Act Compliance

Compliance with Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) and Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS) regarding the Buy American Act for the procurement of supplies is challenging given the plethora of trade agreements enacted by Congress over the years. Suggest a website or link where a buyer/purchasing agent could enter the name of the country (place of manufacture) of the product to be procured. The ...more »

Create Self-Plus-One option for Federal Healthcare Benefits

How many federal employees would benefit from a Self-Plus-One option for health care? Young couples, single parents, empty-nesters? How much money would the federal government save from paying lower premiums? OPM says that creating this option would not generate enough revenue to cover high-risk (elderly) members benefits however, if it's possible for the dental and vision programs to offer a self-plus-one option (which ...more »

Eco Font

Mandate Eco Font on all Federal correspondence, reports, memoranda, and forms.

The "eco font" has microscopic holes in each letter, and saves in printing costs. The font could be loaded onto each Federal Government computer so that users would have it readily available when creating documents.

Increase building temperatures by 3 degrees

According to the California Energy Commission, we can save 1-3 percent on our AC bills for every degree the thermostat is set above 72 degrees. If every federal facility (whose temperatures are most likely set below 72 degrees) increased it's temperature by 3 degrees, the government could save in energy costs.

AUTHORIZE OFFICE BUDGET CARRYOVER TO FOLLOW ON YEARS

EVERY YEAR IT IS COMMON PRACTICE TO SPEND DOWN ALLOCATED BUDGETS IN ORDER TO RECEIVE THE SAME OR MORE FOR THE FOLLOWING YEAR. THIS CAN BE WASTEFUL BECAUSE THE PERCEPTIONS ARE THAT IF YOU DON'T USE IT, YOUR BUDGET WILL BE REDUCED THE NEXT YEAR. MOST OF THE TIME, THOSE REMAINING DOLLARS ARE SIMPLY BLOWN ON UNNECESSARY ITEMS, TRAINING AND NICE TO HAVE SUPPLIES WHICH COULD OTHERWISE FALL INTO THE WASTE, FRAUD AND ABUSE CATEGORY. ...more »

Stop Double Dipping BAH Pay

Quote: "Beginning in January 2005, Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) rates are designed to cover 100 percent of the average rental costs for the type of dwelling authorized for the specific paygrade (rank). " Married active duty military members are receiving near "double" BAH pay. for example a married 0-3 working in Washington D.C., makes $2538.00 with dependants. Two married 0-3's at the same location will make $4625.00. ...more »

Budget Surplus Incentive

Instead of "use or lose" the government should incentivize agencies for having money left over. If an agency has money left over they should be able to keep half of the excess plus the same budget as the year before. The other half of the excess could go to a debt service fund to pay down the debt. So if an agency was given a $100,000 budget for a year and spent $80,000 the agency would have a $110,000 budget the next ...more »

In Vessel Composter

Mandate the purchase of In-Vessel Composters at all DoD installations that have housing and dining facilities. This idea falls under cost avoidance. DoD installations pay for waste disposal, and an in-vessel composter would pay for itself in less than 4-7 years (depending on solid waste disposal prices at each location). The composter would also provide mulch and landscaping materials that would provide further cost ...more »

Income from taxing foreign imports

Taxing imported products would bring in an excellent source of income for US coffers. Instead of making it easier for products to be made in foreign countries, make it beneficial for American companies to produce "Made in the USA" products once again. Outsourcing takes jobs and income away from US citizens and gives them to foreigners. All well and good as long as the products we import are being taxed at a rate that ...more »

Easy savings

I sent this last year. The personal vehicle reimbursement is way too high!!! Even at $4 per gallon and a car getting 15 mpg, that cost is 26 cents. A 50% premium for personal expenses would save the government 10 cents per mile. That's about $100,000,000!!!!!

Keep in mind FTEs profit on using POV, so not only would we save this way, but encourage carpooling and use of gov't. vehicles.
