Every year for the annual achievement awards, the Department of Labor gives out plaques to every person who gets an award. Over the last 15 years, I have accumulated a stack of about 20 wood, felt, and metal plaques that cannot be recycled or re-used. For these kinds of annual recognition awards, I wouldn't mind a simple paper or electronic certificate (especially since the Department has now starting attaching a monetary ...more »

Save money by paying down the debt, and don't let default happen (or else interest rates rise, and the US debt will crush us!). The equation is taxes on income are source of funding for Govt. Currently govt is working on the wrong part by thinking to reduce Soc Sec, Medicaid, which help people, while ignoring the fact that TWENTYFIVE PERCENT of workers are UN/UNDER-EMPLOYED!! (9% unemployed, 17% underemployed = 26%) Now ...more »
Eliminate forever the SES Bonuses. It is not necessary to reward SES employees to the tune of $5,000 or $10,000 or more for the work their staffs did during the year, especially while the SESer is already making more than $150,000! Let them compete for the little $500 cash awards like the rest of the GS staff.
Carlson Wagonlit/Sato Travel is a government contractor to forty-eight (48) federal agencies and every branch of the military. Last year, they did $2.3 billion in travel sales to federal agencies. Transactions for travel, especially airfare, with Carlson Wagonlit, can cost two to three times what the individual can book online. Worse, the company's website is tedious and frustrating to use. And, if there is an error, ...more »
Discrimination is discrimination. Within the FS I see the majority of new workers are of color. You cannot right past wrongs by creating a new wrong. Do not allow discrimination-period. It only will cause further hate a discontent- and this generation should not have to bear the burden of a few plantation owners, especially since most of them lost everything they had
I noticed that the plants and flowers used for landscaping around the Capitol, the Mall, and other Federally-managed land is changed every couple months. Even when the landscapers use perennials and bulbs, these are dug up and replaced by new plants and flowers in order to maximize the visual effect. I think equally beautiful displays can be made with a well-thought out garden plan using a variety of perennials, bulbs, ...more »
Limit the collection of unemployment benifits to 6 months.
The Federal Government should reduce work schedules to 7 hours a day instead of 8. This would equal 10 hours less per pay period. Multiply that by approximately 2.15 million employees = $$$$$$ in savings. This measure will result in huge savings in payroll costs while avoiding layoffs. The reduction in salary may not be significant to create a burden on the employee (better fewer hours than no job at all). In addition, ...more »
We spend large amounts of money for travel for aour Mangers to communicate with other Senior Managers.
Use video telecons like we all use on skype to reduce the need for travel. I would suggest that 80 to 90 persent of the travel budget could be eliminated.
Currently, every mine inspection has a paper copy prepared that includes notes, photos, citations, health notes, and various attachments. These components are all electronically generated except for the notes and health notes. The notes and health notes could be scanned into a PDF format and all other components added to the file. This would save hours per inspection as well as copying, filing, mailing, and lost materials. ...more »
Each agency has background checks. The agencies should coordinate their security requirements and data share. Obviously depending on the position and the level of security needed there will be a need for ongoing investiagtions. However there is no reason to have to recreate the entire file and process when individuals move from position to position even across agencies. If there were either a central investigative ...more »
Do NOT give free gym memberships to employees as a part of an employment package. Gym-going employees will have a membership regardless of who pays. Others will take it and never use it. If $30-50 is preventing an employee from going to the gym, they don't want to go to the gym.
