Eliminate the shuttle service between offices and METRO center.

JPATS transports a vast majority of federal prisoners around the country. They fly multiple planes Monday thru Saturday. The numbers of inmates they transport are mind boggling and they have a huge responsibility. But, simply put, their scheduled landing times are rarely met and often with hours of delays. These delays cause the BOP bus crews assigned to affectuate these airlifts to incur many hours of overtime premium... more »
I for the Bureau of Prisons and I am also a National Guard Soldier. I notice that on the DoD side of the house we currently use the CAC card which enables common access to systems. If the DoJ-BoP were to go to the CAC systems it would reduce the amount of passwords and systems needed thus reducing log-in times and administrative cost of upkeep and eventually let us get on the DoD procurement system which would allow the... more »
If staff would begin using electronic copies of Pre- Sentence Investigation Reports and Judgement & Commitment files instead of hard copies, we could save on paper and storage space. Currently, at each institution, copies of the same documents are maintained in each inmates central file and each inmates judgement and commitent file. The documents are printed from an electronic file. We could eliminate the hard copy... more »
IN THE BUREAU OF PRISONS SOME OF THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENTS WORK ON SUNDAY. YOU COULD SAVE SUNDAY PREMIUMS BY NOT WORKING SUNDAYS.
ON HOLIDAYS IN SOME EDUCATION DEPARTMENTS THEY MAKE THE STAFF WORK ON THE HOLIDAY. LOOK HOW MUCH MONEY YOU COULD SAVE BY NOT WORKING ON THE HOLIDAYS.
Pull in the abusers of the NAC trips from the West Coast. In other words limit the amount of trips per year that a staff member is qualified to take. Assistant US Attorneys and legal advisors should not be limited as staff members (secretaries, receptionists).
As an employee of the Federal Bureau of Prisons, staff are required to work 24 hours a day and 365 days per year including holidays. When staff work a holiday, they are paid accordingly. If you are considered "non-essential staff", normally non-custody staff, you are given the holiday off with pay. If your day off falls on the holiday, you are given an "in lieu of holiday" that either gives you holiday pay or the holiday... more »
Policy requires Unit Team (UT) staff to work nights and weekends. Staff are trying to do more with less (collateral duties, working officer posts, covering unassigned staff duties) while other agencies are required to take unpaid days, a way to save government money is to disallow workers who can complete their normal duties during regular business hours, from working after 6pm and weekends. Case Managers (CM) and Counselors... more »
The enhancement of BOP inmate telephone monitoring could be dramatically enhanced via the creation of a BOP Communications Monitoring Center on the grounds of FCC Allenwood. By such a center staffed by some 450 odd staff responsible for nation-wide inmate telephone monitoring supplementing, and coordinating criminal investigations that are telephone related, some 600-700 staff engaged in telephone monitoring at BOP... more »
The shuttered former Federal Prison Camp Allenwood should be remodeled and turned into the BOP correctional academy. By having USP, FCi, and LSCI Allenwood right ehre and USP Lewisburg 20 minutes away, new BOP staff in Introduction to Correctional Techniques could receive enahnced training though a one-week addition to the ICT coursem of which will be spent in on-the-job training under field training officers at FCC... more »
BOP institutions haveing substantial excess lands should have UNICOR partner with landfill authorities to operate and maintain large-scale landfills on BOP excess lands. (1) inamte ideness will be reduced, (2) inamtes will learn valuable skills for use upon their return to non-confinement life, (3) the landfills gas would be the sole property of the BOP and thus create SUBSTANTIAL long-term income for the BOP.
The newer government buildings have automatic flush toilets. Unfortunately, these toilets are wasting water because they flush at least two to three times with each user thereby increasing the expense and unnecessary use of water. I would suggest installing the sensor in a different area or one that requires the user to actually trigger the sensor.
To reduce Fraud and Waste in Federal Grant making, require succesfull applicants to participate in matching fund based opportunities. It requires the applicant to put some skin in the game and provides an indication of the fiscal capacity and responsibility. Think of it like a housing loan; no money down? More bad loans. 20% down, fewer bad loans. many programs require matching funds. However, more of them do not. It... more »
In my office the default setting for printing paper is to print single sided. It is rarely necessary to print material on only one side of a page. Each time I print material (pleadings, court cases, memos, etc.) I change the default setting to print double sided. If the IT staff re-set the default setting for all printers to double sided, I would expect most employees to use that setting, cutting paper usage in half.... more »
We currently use wooden broom sticks and hard plastic handles for mops, brooms, and dust pans. Inmates make weight sets and weapons with these items. We should recycle used government and civilian tires for use as thick rubber mop handles, brooms sticks, dustpants etc. This would be too weak to cut off and make as a weight set , nor easy to sharpen as a weapon. Our institutions would be safer, and the environment cleaner.... more »
