In addition to buying duplexing printers, operations staff should be directed to set most printers to automatically default to 2-sided copying. Most copy jobs can be 2-sided but it takes time and effort to manually change each copy job to 2-sided and people forget. Users could still manually change to single sided if necessary.
Why is it that when I fly on official government business, I also seem to pay more for my airline ticket than I would if I were buying it privately? The government should not make any payment by check. Just at my agency, we deal with many checks that are misplaced or lost by the recipient. The electronic payments have much fewer issues and are cheaper for the government to produce. Also, the electronic payments save the government money by requiring less manpower since they don't have to be reissued as often. Require that every federal agency adopt lean standards to increase organizational efficiencies.
Lean is a concept used more frequently in business and manufacturing in which all business processes are examined to ensure they add value to customer. In this case the customer is the taxpayer. Do all practices in every federal agency add value to the taxpayer? Adopting lean practices would ensure this were true.

The current system of orienting VISTA members requires extensive travel, accommodation, and training costs to our agency. The system is complicated by the fact that many members relocate and are required to attend a training at a regional site before heading to their site of service. At some printers in CNCS Headquarters, your name/work station prints on a separate page before your print order (thus helping to separate your print job from the person before/after you).
This is wasteful.
I am scheduled to be on official travel in the next month and will be travelling to DC from Ohio. When the travel contractor provided my itinerary, the cost was over $1,000 because there is no GSA contract with any airlines from the Columbus airport to any DC airport.
