YOUR SAVINGS ARE IN THE MAIL

The Federal Government sends out millions of letters and packages annually. If each Government agency were required to analyze the processes and methods used to send out these letters and packages; and streamline them to be cost effective, efficient, and greener, the Federal Government collectively could potentially save $1 million or more by utilizing the practices below:

• Mailing letters using #10 envelopes vs. flats

(up to $1.00 per piece in savings)

• Cleaning their address lists prior to mailings

(savings of up to $.44 per returned piece; not

including processing costs for the USPS)

• Shipping packages the “best” or most economical

way (savings of up to $50 per package)

• Processing certified mail through automation

(savings of $1.00 per piece; labor cost savings of

going from 3 minutes to 30 seconds per piece

processing)

• Converting low volume usage postage meters to

online postage (savings of up to $100k or more per

agency)

• Using strategic sourcing pricing vs. published rates

through GSA for shipping packages (savings of up

to $100k or more per agency)

The Department of Transportation has saved over $500k this fiscal year by utilizing the strategic sourcing option through GSA.
