Travel Cost Savings

According to the Federal Travel Regulation (FTR), travelers are entitled to 75% of the prescribed meals and incidental expenses for one day travel away from your official station if it is longer than 12 hours. Please see FTR ยง301-11.101

This is appropriate for domestic travel since it is the practice of airlines to not provide food or beverages. International flights tend to offer food and beverages due to the duration of the flights. As such, travelers are not as likely to spend their per diem earned for this period. It is recommended that the formula be reduced to 50% instead of 75% of the prescribed meals and incidental expenses for one day travel away from your official station if it is longer than 12 hours. This reduction will not impose to much of a hardship on travelers and will achieve a 33% savings on all international travel departure day and on return portion of flight M&IE.
