NARA Document Retention Costs/Standards

It’s time to look at updating document retention policies, what we must keep, and how materials are provided to NARA. Everything has to be printed out, placed in files, placed in special boxes, labeled a certain way, and then the agency has to pay NARA to store items until they are destroyed or accessioned into NARA’s holdings per the agency retention policy. How many hours and expensive supplies are spent going through all this for items that will be destroyed in a few years? Granted we do not have sufficient office space, but there needs to be a lesser standard for things that will never be part of the NARA holdings.
