MANAGING EQUIPMENT REPAIR COSTS

THE SURGICAL DEPARTMENT SPENDS A GREAT DEAL OF MONEY PURCHASING NEW EQUIPMENT FOR OUR PATIENTS AND SURGEONS. THE VA IS VERY GENEROUS. MANY OF THE ITEMS USED IN THE O.R. ARE VERY DELICATE AND EASILY DAMAGED. COST TO REPAIR EQUIPMENT SUCH AS OUR FLEXIBLE ENDOSCOPES HAS BEEN WELL OVER $200,000 THIS YEAR ALONE. ONE OPTION MIGHT BE DEVELOPING A LEASING PROGRAM WITH THE COMPANIES. THIS COULD BE A VISN WIDE PROGRAM WHERE WE MIGHT GET A BETTER VALUE FOR OUR DOLLARS SPENT. THE COMPANY IS THEN VESTED IN BEING SURE OUR SPD STAFF AND OR STAFF ARE HANDLING AND PROCESSING THE EQUIPMENT TO THE HIGHEST STANDARDS. THEY ARE ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR REPAIRS AND REPLACEMENT/EXCHANGE OF DAMAGED OR BROKEN EQUIPMENT. I BELIEVE THE MONIES SAVED COULD GO TOWARDS INCREASING OUR FTE'S IN THE SPD DEPARTMENT. THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR SURGERY AND ALL OF THE OTHER CLINICS IN THE HOSPITAL SUCH AS ENT, DENTAL, OPHTHALOLMOLGY AND PODITRY.

A PROGRAM LIKE THIS INSURES THAT THE HOSPITAL ALWAYS HAS THE MOST UPDATED EQUIPMENT AND THAT CASES ARE NOT CANCELLED DUE TO THE EQUIPMENT BEING UNAVAILABLE.
